The real timeline depends on what material you choose, how complex your kitchen is, and whether your installer fabricates in-house or sends your slab to a third party. At SY STONE, we have been fabricating and fitting stone worktops across London — from Harrow to Hackney, Kingston to Edgware — for years. This guide is based on real project data.

The Four Stages of Every Worktop Installation

Most companies quote you an “installation day” figure — but that only tells you about Stage 4. Understanding all four stages is what lets you plan your renovation correctly.

1
Site Survey & Templating

A specialist visits your kitchen, takes precise measurements at multiple points, confirms cut-out positions for your sink and hob, and discusses edge profiles and finish choices. This is a precision template that drives every cut in our workshop.

⏱ 1 to 2 hours on-site

2
Slab Sourcing & Selection

For engineered quartz, the colour is matched from stock or ordered. For natural stones — granite, marble — the specific slab must be located, inspected, and reserved at a supplier yard. We always involve clients in slab approval before cutting begins.

⏱ 1 to 5 working days

3
Workshop Fabrication

The slab is CNC-cut to your exact template in our in-house workshop. Edges are profiled, sink and hob openings are precision-cut, drainage grooves are routed, and seam joints are pre-fitted. Fabricating in-house gives us full control over quality and timeline.

⏱ 3 to 8 working days

4
On-Site Installation

The fabricated stone is delivered and fitted to your cabinets. Seams are jointed and colour-matched. Cut-outs are finished, upstands fitted, and the site cleaned. Your plumber and electrician reconnect appliances after our team leaves — a legal requirement carried out by qualified tradespeople.

⏱ 1 to 3 days on-site

Timelines by Material

Each material has a different fabrication requirement. Here is what to expect for each.

Quartz Worktops
⚡ Fastest Option
Stage Time
Template visit 1 – 2 hours
Colour sourcing & confirmation 1 – 3 working days
CNC fabrication & edge profiling 5 – 7 working days
On-site installation 1 – 2 days
Total: first contact → finished kitchen 7 – 14 days

Quartz is our fastest material to fabricate and install. Because it is engineered stone in consistent, uniform slabs, there are no natural fissures to account for during cutting. Colour matching at seams is highly reliable. For landlords and family homes with tight timelines, quartz is almost always our first recommendation.

What can extend it: Premium finishes like Calacatta Gold may need ordering from a distributor, adding 2–4 days. Complex waterfall island edges add approximately one extra fabrication day.

Granite Worktops
⚙ Moderate Lead Time
Stage Time
Template visit 1 – 2 hours
Slab viewing & selection at yard 1 – 3 working days
CNC fabrication, edge profiling, polishing 5 – 8 working days
On-site installation 1 – 2 days
Total: first contact → finished kitchen 10 – 18 days

Granite is a natural material — no two slabs are identical. Before fabrication begins, we arrange slab viewing and approval at our supplier yard to ensure the pattern and colour match your expectations. This extra step eliminates unpleasant surprises on installation day. Granite fabrication also requires slightly slower CNC feed rates to protect the crystalline structure at cut edges.

What can extend it: Exotic imported granite varieties (Blue Bahia, Titanium, etc.) may add 3–6 days. Large kitchens needing multiple slabs with pattern continuity need additional vein-matching planning time.

Marble Worktops
⏰ Longest Lead Time
Stage Time
Template visit (extended detail required) 1.5 – 2.5 hours
Slab selection & vein-direction confirmation 2 – 5 working days
CNC fabrication, edge profiling, sealing 6 – 10 working days
On-site installation 1 – 3 days
Total: first contact → finished kitchen 10 – 21 days

Marble is the most time-intensive material we work with and the most spectacular when done correctly. It is softer than granite and more sensitive to vibration during cutting, requiring reduced CNC feed rates. Vein-matching — aligning the veining across two slabs before cutting so they flow continuously — adds time but produces results that are immediately obvious to any observer.

Honest advice: If you need a kitchen operational within 12 days, quartz is the more practical choice. If you have time and want the finest natural stone look available, marble is unmatched.

Porcelain & Dekton Worktops
◆ Specialist Fabrication
Stage Time
Template visit 1 – 2 hours
Material order & delivery to workshop 3 – 7 working days
Specialist fabrication (dedicated tooling) 5 – 8 working days
On-site installation 1 – 2 days
Total: first contact → finished kitchen 10 – 18 days

Ultra-compact surfaces like Dekton require dedicated specialist tooling. Standard diamond blades used for granite will chip a porcelain slab. SY STONE uses porcelain-specific diamond blades and modified CNC parameters, producing clean, chip-free edges consistently.

On-Site Installation Days by Project Size

These figures are for on-site time only — the days our team is in your kitchen. Add your fabrication lead time on top for your total project window.

Project Type On-Site Days Notes
Small galley kitchen (1 run, no island) 0.5 – 1 day Simplest install, minimal seams
Standard kitchen (2–3 runs, 1 sink cut-out) 1 – 2 days Most common London job
L-shape or U-shape kitchen 1.5 – 2 days Corner seaming adds precision time
Large kitchen with island (3+ runs) 2 – 3 days Multiple seams, hob cut-out, island finishing
Kitchen island replacement only 0.5 – 1 day Fastest single-piece job
Full kitchen + utility room 2 – 4 days Two rooms, separate template runs
Commercial kitchen (restaurant / office) 3 – 5+ days Contact us for commercial scheduling

What Causes Delays — And How to Avoid Them

Most worktop installation delays are caused by the same five factors, and almost all are preventable.

⚠  Most Common Delay Causes

Cabinets not fully installed before templatingIf base units are not level and fixed when we visit, our template is inaccurate. We will not template an incomplete kitchen — any movement after templating means a re-cut at extra cost.

Appliance specs not confirmed before templatingChanging your sink model after templating changes the cut-out dimensions and resets fabrication. Confirm all appliance specifications before we visit.

Slab availability for rare natural stonesPremium marble and granite varieties can be limited. SY STONE maintains relationships across multiple London stone yards, but exotic stones may add 3–7 days to sourcing.

Plumbing & electrical not disconnected on installation dayWe cannot fit a worktop above a connected sink or hob. Book your plumber and electrician before booking installation with us — not the other way around.

Using an installer without an in-house workshopCompanies sending slabs to third-party fabricators lose control over timeline and quality. SY STONE fabricates everything in our own Dollis Hill workshop — we control every stage end to end.

How to Speed Up Your London Installation

If you have a tight deadline, here is how to compress the timeline without cutting corners.

01

Choose quartz over natural stone

5–7 day fabrication vs 6–10 for marble. If your timeline is tight, quartz is the practical decision.

02

Have cabinets ready before you call

We can combine the quote visit and template visit into one appointment, saving 2–4 days immediately.

03

Confirm appliance specs in advance

Have your sink and hob installation guides ready at the template visit. This eliminates 1–2 days of back-and-forth.

✦ Frequently Asked Questions

Everything London Homeowners Ask About Worktop Timelines

How long does kitchen worktop installation take in London from start to finish?
+

From your first contact with SY STONE to a completed, fitted worktop, the typical timeline is 1 to 3 weeks for most London residential projects. The on-site installation itself takes just 1 to 3 days — the rest of the time is templating, slab sourcing, and workshop fabrication.

The shortest possible timeline — quartz, simple kitchen, cabinets already fitted — is approximately 7 to 10 days. The longest, for a complex marble kitchen with vein-matched slabs, can reach 21 days. We always give a specific written timeline in every quote so there are no surprises.

How long does quartz worktop installation take in London?
+

Quartz is our fastest material. Total lead time from first contact to completed installation is 7 to 14 days. On-site installation takes 1 to 2 days. Fabrication runs 5 to 7 working days.

Quartz is fast because it is engineered in consistent slabs with no natural fissures — CNC feed rates are higher, colour matching is reliable, and there is no slab-yard viewing stage. For landlords and time-sensitive renovations, quartz is almost always our first recommendation.

How long does granite worktop installation take in London?
+

Granite takes 10 to 18 days total from first contact to completed fit. On-site installation is 1 to 2 days. The additional time compared to quartz comes from slab selection at the stone yard (1–3 days) and slightly slower CNC fabrication due to granite’s crystalline structure.

We always arrange slab viewing and approval before cutting begins — this prevents any surprise with pattern or colour and is an essential step for natural stone. Imported or exotic granite varieties may add a further 3–6 days to the sourcing stage.

How long does marble worktop installation take — and is it worth the wait?
+

Marble takes 10 to 21 days total. On-site installation is 1 to 3 days. The longer timeline reflects marble’s sensitivity during cutting, the multi-stage edge polishing process, and the vein-matching required when two slabs meet at a seam.

Is it worth it? If you have the time, absolutely yes. A correctly vein-matched, hand-polished marble worktop is the finest finish available for a London kitchen. Our honest advice: if you need your kitchen operational within 12 days, choose quartz. If you have time and want the best, marble is unmatched.

What is the difference between “installation day” and “full lead time”?
+

The installation day is only the time our team is physically in your kitchen fitting the stone — typically 1 to 2 days. This is the number most companies use in their marketing because it sounds fast.

The full lead time is the total time from first contact to a finished kitchen, including quote, template visit, slab sourcing, workshop fabrication, and on-site fit. For planning your renovation, the full lead time is the number that matters. At SY STONE, we always quote both numbers clearly in writing so you can plan accurately.

Can I use my kitchen during the installation period?
+

During the fabrication period (typically 5–10 days between template and installation), your kitchen is fully usable — the stone is being cut in our workshop and nothing is happening in your home.

On installation day(s), your kitchen is out of action. The existing worktops are removed, the new stone is fitted, and seam adhesive needs 24 hours to cure without load. The day after installation, your plumber and electrician reconnect appliances and the kitchen is fully operational again.

How soon can SY STONE visit for a free template in London?
+

In most London areas we can arrange a free onsite template visit within 2 to 5 working days of your initial enquiry. For urgent projects, call us directly on 07401644531 and we will bring that visit forward wherever possible.

We cover all London boroughs from our Dollis Hill Lane base in NW2, including Harrow, Kingston, Watford, Edgware, Camden, Islington, Hackney, Wandsworth, Southwark, and all surrounding areas. The template visit is completely free with no obligation to proceed.

Do I need to be present on installation day? What should I prepare?
+

Yes — an adult must be present throughout installation to answer any on-the-day questions and sign off on the completed work before our team leaves.

Before we arrive: have your old worktops removed (or confirm we are doing this), all appliances disconnected by a qualified tradesperson, cabinets clear, access path clear of furniture and fragile items, and pets secured in a separate room. We send a pre-installation checklist by email after confirming your date.

Can you install a worktop on the same day as templating?
+

No — and any company offering this is not providing bespoke fabrication. Genuine CNC-fabricated stone worktops require a minimum of 5 working days in the workshop after templating. This time is what produces invisible seams, clean cut-outs, and precise edge profiles.

“Same-day” installations use pre-cut modular sections trimmed on-site with hand-held tools. The result is visible gaps, rough cut-outs, and inconsistent edge profiles — a fundamentally different and inferior product. If you are quoted same-day stone installation, ask whether your worktop will be CNC-cut from a full slab in a workshop. The answer will tell you everything.

Does SY STONE offer a guarantee on installation workmanship?
+

Yes. Every SY STONE installation includes a workmanship warranty covering all seam joints, edge profiles, sink and hob cut-outs, upstands, and the overall fit of the stone to your cabinets.

If any aspect of our workmanship shows a defect — a seam that moves, an edge that chips at a fabrication line — we return to site and fix it at no charge. We also leave you with written aftercare guidance specific to your stone so you know exactly how to look after it for years to come.
